Getting the worm!

Groups of Sanderlings feed on small worms at low times on Meon Shore Hill Head. Like little clockwork robots, they run up and down, dodging both Black-heading gulls trying to get a free lunch and the incoming tide. These are my favorite shore birds, and I spend many hours watching them.

Bugs life!

Stonechats mainly eat insects, but they also eat seeds and fruits, especially in the colder periods when insects are scarce.

As you can see in my pictures, there were plenty of insects about today!

Three Lights.

Over time, three lighthouses have been built on Portland Bill headland. The original two short lighthouses were built in 1716. They worked together as a pair, and had coal-fired lights, and were said to be unreliable. They were replaced in 1906 by the current red and white striped one. All three lighthouses are still standing.
