Dalmatian pelican – Are the largest and rarest of the pelican species with a wingspan up to 11 feet. Once a common sight in the UK (2000 years ago). Sadly they became extinct here, due to the loss of wetlands and being hunted for food.

It is always sad to see a species of bird or animals disappear. What a majestic bird.

I echo what Peggy said. I’ve only seen the brown pelicans, but a fellow blogger lived in Iowa and got photos of beautiful white pelicans.

I always tool at at pictures of Pelicans in the USA and think I would love to see some – we went to WWT Arundel https://www.wwt.org.uk/wetland-centres/arundel/ and I was over the moon to see they has some!

Thank you for the link Andy. That is fascinating about how large these Dalmation Pelicans are. Maybe with this wetland preserve and the area built just for them, they will thrive and no longer be extinct. The size of the pouch on those Dalmation Pelicans is amazing. I saw the brown pelicans on a trip to Mexico years ago. In that area, there were many brown pelicans. I remember I bought a wooden carved pelican for my grandmother and she was so excited to have it.

On the information board, it said they could hold 3 buckets of water in their bill!
