Passing through.

The Osprey became extinct in the British Isles in 1916 but recolonised in 1954. Scandinavian birds migrate through Britain on the way to their breeding sites.

The Ospreys’ main UK stronghold is now in Scotland. In 2001, they began breeding in England in Cumbria, at Rutland Water. {here they were introduced}.

UK breeding:240+ pairs.

Birds are seen in our area on migration – We spotted this bird with fish today at Titchfield Haven which I expect stopped off for lunch on passage North.

Far off so zoomed in. A rare spot for me in the UK.

  1. Those are the images that have eluded me for years. The Osprey at the nest close to my home usually go fishing around 10 am, but I’m always too late to see them.

One day, I visited the nest — but without my camera — and I heard people on the beach yelling, “That bird caught a fish!”

What a sight to see how an Osprey dives head first into the water to catch a fish. Their nose is designed so that they don’t drown while mostly submerged.

    • I remember seeing some of your pictures a while back David. This is only the second time I have seen an Osprey last time was years ago in Wales and just a speck on a next pole but with TV feed. This was a very lucky flyover.
