Since last week the Great Crested Grebes have hatched and left the nest. They are now riding on the back of the parent bird, while the other parent is catching small fish that he passes to the young Humbugs.

Is that the term used for the young?

Yes Wayne nickname due to the colour. Do not know if in Canada you have the boiled mint sweets called humbugs which are black and white striped.

My Grandfather was born in Bury.
I remember seeing and having Humbugs in his house when I was a child.

This is, what I wanted to know as well. Humbug in German means something like “funny nonsense”.

A British thing.

They are unique-looking birds, especially looking straight at you. I’ve only seen a Pied-billed Grebe here. In Canada, when I was kid, we had Laura Secord Candy Shoppes where you could buy “Humbugs” candy (butter mints that were striped).

We have a few different grebes here but only the Little Grebe and Great Crested do I regularly see. Glad you have seen the mints!

They were beautiful and unique looking Andy. Oh yes, my parents wouldn’t let me eat candy and only a chocolate bunny at Easter, so when I visited my grandmother in Toronto, I have fond memories of her having a little bag of Humbug in her apron pocket to share with me. Only Laura Secord candy shops sold Humbugs.
