Yesterday (12th January).
Large parts of our local lake were frozen. I was surprised to see a pair of Great Crested Grebes building a nest. Further on I was even more surprised. A second pair had built a nest and one of the birds was sitting on it.

The reflections are gorgeous here and I’ve never seen waterfowl toting a stick to the nest but then I’ve only seen one nest in the water and it was elevated on a very tiny island.

Interesting the would start so early – they must’ve found a prime nesting spot!

I can’t believe they are getting going already! There’s surely still some pretty poor weather to come before winter loosens it’s grip.
