Here in the UK, there is a small breeding population of around 18,000 pairs. During the winter months, numbers increase to over 100,000 birds from as far away as central Russia.

They are striking with the tuft and that golden eye.

That is a great increase of numbers in the winter months. I find it fascinating how birds can instinctually travel in the winter months.
The tuft gives these birds a cool look!

Some come south from Russia and the artic circle to “warmer” England but to me it is far from warm!!!
