I recently got a GoPro but it’s not what I wanted in a camera. I’m not an action shot person. So the camera I’m looking at right now is this one from Amazon.
That should serve you well for mixed photography, the GoPro is as you say much a video camera. Make sure you go for a known brand Canon Nikon Fuji Minolta Lumax – there a lot of unknown brands on Amazon.

The other thing you could do is rent a camera to try it out some of the camera shops do that.
