Cuckoo.

The sounds of the Cuckoos call are now in the New Forest. Cuckoos have started to arrive from Africa. They are summer visitors and are known for being brood parasites. They do not build their own nest, the females lay their eggs in other birds’ nests, especially Meadow Pipits, Dunnocks and Warblers. When a female Cuckoo finds a suitable nest, and the host bird is away she removes one of their eggs and lays her own egg in its place. Cuckoo young hatch after just 12 days, and push the hosts’ eggs or babies out of the nest, allowing it to eat all food brought by the host bird. When the young Cuckoo leaves the nest, it is far bigger than the host bird. I only saw one today but at least 3 were calling.

  1. Interesting, so cuckoos are squatters. That’s a hot-topic issue in America where people are granted squatter’s rights to take possession of someone else’s home. The owner has very little recourse. The law presumes that the person in possession is the legal resident. If the owner turns off the utilities or tries to force the squatters out, they would be in violation of the law — especially if the squatter can show that they have paid for services.

The owner has only two options — a lengthy eviction process or change the locks when the squatter steps out. On one occasion, the owner got creative. They sent their nephew to occupy the house and annoy the squatters. It worked. The squatters moved out and the owner took back their home.

It’s interesting that human behavior is so very similar to other species within the animal kingdom.

Of course, it begs the question, how did our society devolve to the point where criminals are afforded greater rights than their victims? We are, after all, homo sapiens — not cuckoo birds.
