Fallow deer bucks typically cast their antlers annually, usually between April and May. The regrowth of new antlers follows this process. They are initially covered in soft, velvety skin. This skin is later rubbed off, leaving a hardened antler by August or September.
I watched 4 bucks in the New Forest this morning. Three had cast their antlers. The one still with his antlers had taken the alpha role and was dominant in this small group.
Your Fallow Deer always amaze me how they gaze at you so intently. They are not afraid as they stand there, then finally move on and begin grazing. They look so different than our White-tailed deer. That’s interesting about shedding the antlers.

The buck with atlers at one point, I thought may have ran at me hence by a tree I could have dodged behind!

I did notice he kept his eyes trained on you for a while and the others just were milling about! It’s wise to always ensure you have a tree to dodge behind when out in the woods. π
