Swallows are small birds. They are extremely agile in flight and spend most of their time in the air. They are widespread breeding birds in the Northern Hemisphere and migrate south in winter. This family has left their nest and is being fed in a tree. They were a joy to watch on today’s walk in the New Forest.

They resemble our Barn Swallows and I’m always amazed how they catch insects in the air, but wow – I didn’t know they fed their young by hovering in mid-air as well. Very interesting video and pictures Andy. Those chicks with their open mouths … all baby birds are so needy and seem to have a “bottomless pit” when it comes to being fed.

Actually you are 100% correct as in the UK we have just one Swallow while the USA has many species of Swallow they use a longer common name Barn Swallow but they are both the same, having the latin name Hirundo rustica.

They are difficult to capture Simon, as Andy said – both are species are very quick moving and seldom rest.

A lot of ours nest in Barns or under roof over hangs. Think they have moved out to the tree.
