A dead 3-foot shark on the beach – A Smooth Hound, also known as Grumpy Shark and a Smut. Listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Sadly, fishing killed this fish. It was held in the water by 4 lead weights and 30 feet of broken fishing line.
Fishing line is a major hazard on our local beaches, especially to waders and Swans.

Poor guy…are those fishing lines that break off when people go fishing?

Yes the lead weight hooks and line break and litter the shore, I have seen Swans with the lines around them.

Oh, that’s awful for the wildlife! Thanks for explaining it.

Sad indeed! I’ve heard of many fish being caught up in abandoned fish net. These ghost nets capture so many fish that the sheer weight drops them to the ocean floor where the crabs and such polish them off.

Walking the shore last week discarded VAPs seem to be the latest throw into the sea item.

I see you Brits like to go “mudlarking”. You ever do that?

That is sad what happened to this shark. We often have this problem with our waterfowl. I follow a waterfowl rescue site on Facebook – Matt and his volunteers rescue mostly ducks, but they often show photos of swans and geese with fishing line constricting their legs and feet to a point where the avian vets have to amputate.
