I watched a commotion: a mother duck flying at a Herring Gull. It was sad to see her give up, and the gull fly off with a duckling in its mouth. Walking the other side of the pond, I found her again with only one lone duckling trying to keep it in the water lilies for safety.

Nice little walk for you Andy. It’s sad to see the duckling carried away by another Herring Gull (like last week when it nabbed a chick). The remaining duckling looks a bit lost in the last pictures of it with its mom. Nature is cruel indeed.

You have got to feel for Mother Duck as she mist have started with so many ducklings and now only has the one.

Yes, you have to wonder because ducks usually have a fairly large clutch – hopefully all didn’t die the same way. Nature is beautiful, but cruel.

In Nature there are neither right or wrong, only consequences.
