I often see these colourful buntings up on the South Downs. I saw 10 or 20 today in small flocks. They were widespread across the UK until the 1960s; Today, the yellowhammer is declining rapidly, disappearing from parts of Scotland and becoming scarce across much of the UK. Populations have plummeted by 61% between 1967 and 2020 due to a lack of food and nesting habitat, earning it a place on the Red List. In the area where I see them, the farming methods leave field-edge strips and maintain their hedgerows.
never heard of this bird before Andy, very pretty!
